Cable Fault Location - Acoustic Method

In conjunction with a surge generator (Thumper) an acoustic detector is used to pinpoint the location of  a cable fault. Modern receivers detect the magnetic impulse of the generated surge pulse as it travels along the cable, and also measures the acoustic (sound of the arc at the point of the breakdown) return and computes the time difference to provide distance to fault information.
